Family activities: “La Camosciara” Nature Reserve by miniature train and Lake Barrea

A place of absolute relaxation and discovery of nature about 40 km from the Cipriani Park Hotel.

The “La Camosciara” Nature Reserve, just a few kilometres from Lake Barrea, is one of the most famous parts of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and certainly the most delicate from a naturalistic and landscape point of view. Set between the municipalities of Opi (AQ) and Civitella Alfadena (AQ), created to protect in particular the Abruzzo chamois and Marsican bears, it is a natural amphitheatre, among spires and ridges of white and grey dolomite.

Starting from the rest area, there are various paths to discover the Nature Reserve on foot, by bike, on horseback or even by train!

The miniature train allows young and old alike to visit the picturesque landscape in an unusual way, travelling along the old Camosciara road, now closed to motorised traffic so as not to disturb the wildlife. The train departs from the service area and arrives at the piazzale, where you can set off on the excursion to the waterfalls, which is about a 10-minute walk away.

You can explore the botanical trail, the Ninfe and the Tre Cannelle waterfalls, the beech forest and the Liscia Refuge. From the nature reserve it is also possible to walk along a stretch of the Regio Tratturo Pescasseroli-Candela to Civitella Alfadena.

After visiting the waterfalls and the Liscia refuge, we recommend a relaxing and sunny break at Lake Barrea. From this year, the artificial lake is suitable for swimming. You can dive into the clear, fresh water from the shores of the “La Gravara” establishment, the “I Safini” restaurant and the Colle Giglio campsite. Along the shores of the lake, walkers and cyclists can find numerous footpaths and cycle paths, as well as pedalos to get closer to the lake.

Just ask at the reception desk: we will be able to advise you on many activities and places to explore with the whole family.
